1976 Tangshan Earthquake

The Tangshan Earthquake also known as the Great Tangshan Earthquake, was a natural disaster that occurred on Wednesday, July 28, 1976. It is believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Tangshan in Hebei, People's Republic of China, an industrial city with approximately one million inhabitants. The number of deaths initially reported by the Chinese government was 655,000, but this number has since been stated to be around 240,000 to 255,000. A further 164,000 people were recorded as being severely injured. The earthquake occurred between a series of political events involving the Communist Party of China, ultimately leading to the expulsion of the ruling Gang of Four by Mao's chosen successor Hua Guofeng. In traditional Chinese thought, natural disasters are seen as a precursor of dynastic change.

The earthquake hit in the early morning, at 03:42:53.8 local time (1976 July 27 19:42:53.8 UTC), and lasted 23 seconds. Chinese government official sources state a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter magnitude scale, though some sources listed it as high as 8.2. It was followed by a major 7.1 magnitude aftershock some 16 hours later, increasing the death toll to over 255,000. The cause was when the 25-mile long Tangshan Fault, which runs near the city, ruptured due to tectonic forces caused from the Okhotsk Plate sliding past the Eurasian Plate.

A. In a 20 year span, Iowa, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Florida were the only states that didn't have earthquakes. In 1556, the world's deadliest earthquake was recorded in Central China, which killed 83000 people. In 1976, Tangshan, China had another deadly earthquake that killed 25000 people. (I don't know if you are allowed to make 2 sentences, but it would be too long to be one sentence).

Richter Scale/Intensity?
Q. Using the Richter scale equation, M=log(S/S_0) The 1985 Mexico City eqrthquake had a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale. The 1976 earthquake in Tangshan, China, was 1.26 times as intense. What was the magnitude of the Tangshan eqrthquake? I know the magnitude was 8.2, but I don't quite now how to solve it. Any help?

A. The mexico city has a magnitude of 8.1=log(S/S_0) china's earthquake was 1.26 times as intense=log(1.26*S/S_0) =log(1.26)+log(S/S_0) =log(1.26)+8.1 and since the Richter scale is based on log 30, you have to compute the first part by: log(1.26)/log(30) .068 so china's earthquake is 8.168

When an earthquake of historic magnitude leveled the industrial city of Tangshan in the summer of 1976, killing more than a half-million people, China was already gripped by widespread social unrest. As Mao lay on his deathbed, the public mourned the death of popular premier Zhou Enlai. Anger toward the powerful Communist Party officials in the Gang of Four, which had tried to suppress grieving for Zhou, was already potent; when the government failed to respond swiftly to the Tangshan disaster, popular resistance to the Cultural Revolution reached a boiling point. In Heaven Cracks, Earth Shakes, acclaimed historian James Palmer tells the startling story of the most tumultuous year in modern Chinese history, when Mao perished, a city crumbled, and a new China was born.
