Etymology
The shell and bone version of 中 was of a flagpole with the pole piercing the middle of a frame (compare the etymology of 吏).

Old Chinese *trjəngʷ (Li Fanggui (1971)). Cognate with Old Tibetan གཞུང (gzhung, "middle, center").[1]
